[Movie Review] The Host (2013)

by Daniel Chiam

A Twilight remake ★★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ 3/10

I have never read the book before. So review will be solely base on the movie itself. I never like The Twilight saga, so my expectation for The Host aren't really high at all since its a story from the same author.

The movie sets in the future where human race has been assimilated by extraterrestrial parasite that called themselves "Souls". Melanie Stryder who was captured by the Seeker was then infuse with a soul called "Wanderer". Melanie somehow survived the procedure and is struggling to take control of the body with "Wanderer".

I'm not quite sure how the peaceful creatures can really invade earth without violence. Then again, this sci-fi movie was anything but an action movie and some girls would just go gaga over this movie (especially the Twilight fans) because its a complicated-sort-of-love-story or just because a body needs to decide between two good looking guys of who should be kissed.

Sad for Malaysian because there were a lot of kissing scenes and it just had to be cut off (thanks to Malaysia's censorship). It's like someone fast forwarded in between scenes and somehow it spoiled the flow of the movie.

I'm not sure how Melanie talks with accent and yet Wanderer that took over her body can speak without an accent. Logically the parasite should have taken the ability of the body itself and be able to do exactly what the body already knows to do.

Anyway, I find the movie overall was a lil' too dull, unintentionally funny at most part and its really feels like a remake of The Twilight in a much different version with all the actions taken out of it.

[Movie Review] Ah Boys To Men 新兵正传 Part 1 & 2

by Daniel Chiam

★★★★☆☆☆☆☆ 5/10

Ah Boys To Men (ABTM) is the latest big budget comedy movie by Jack Neo about the Singapore's National Service (NS) that was made compulsory for every Singaporean male that have reached the age of 18 to be apart of it. ABTM was initially planned to be release as a single movie but due to the long running time, it was then decided to be release as a 2 part movie.

ABTM mainly focuses the life of the recruits in NS; the training, the bonding and how NS actually help to change a person's life. Aside from that, of course there is also a few side stories about some of the recruits outside NS.

Jack Neo still do what he does best, and that is to bring laughter and also to captures the emotions of the audience. Both of the movie was undeniably funny and also heart warming, but my personal favorite would be part 2 of the movie where a lot more was being focus inside the training camp and also the characters growth.

★★★★★★☆☆☆☆ 6/10

Almost all of the main cast acted for the first time in ABTM, but seriously they acted so well that you would not have thought that ABTM was their first debut. Even the theme song of the movie was written and performed by one of the cast member - Tosh Zhang.

Jack Neo has brought out the most talents through ABTM if compared to any of his previous film, the movie was so good that a third installment is already been planned. ABTM is the most expensive movie ever produced by Jack Neo (estimated almost 3 million USD) and also ABTM2 marked Jack Neo's 20th movie in his career as a director.

[Movie Review] Rise of the Guardians (2012)

by Daniel Chiam

Fun to watch ★★ ★★ ☆☆☆☆☆☆ 4/10

Jack Frost (Chris Pine) was recruited as the member of the Guardians along side Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin), the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher), the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman) and the Sandman to fight against Pitch (Jude Law); the Boogeyman, who begins his plan to engulf the world in darkness. Jack agrees to help the Guardians despite being reluctant at first in order to seek the memory of his past life.

A very unique combination of heroes I must say. You have the Russian-mob-like-Santa, an Aussie Bunny and a Sandman that look like Teller from Penn & Teller, fan girls fairy and Jack who? Story line was very much predictable. Nothing is too heavy to digest and its pretty much for young children to enjoy.

I guess Rise of the Guardians is one of those light entertainment by DreamWorks. Not much of a build up to the story line and it carries very little emotional attachment to the story and to the characters. The great thing about it is that it's colorful and it has all the characters that kids were brought up listening to some of their stories.

Overall, the movie is very enjoyable to watch, especially for young children who really believes in Santa, Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, The Sandman, Boogeyman and Jack who? It really is a light movie to watch and to pass the time with some laughter. Other than that, it really is nothing much for us to remember about. At least for us adult I guess, but assuredly kids will love it!

*Do not leave the cinema when the credits start rolling. Wait for another short scene after that.

[Movie Review] Pitch Perfect (2012)

by Daniel Chiam

Entertainingly fun to watch ★★★★★★☆☆☆ 7/10

Beca (Anna Kendrick) who just enrolled to Barden College decided to joined the all-girl a capella group - Bellas after being asked by her dad to try and experience the college life. The Bellas has been struggling all this while to be the champion with their never changing performances, and with the new recruit into their team, things still pretty much stays the same under the leadership of Aubrey (Anna Camp) - Bellas' senior.

Everyone was expecting another Glee rip off with a predictable story line from Pitch Perfect and I say, you all are getting what you've asked for but only better and with a bigger bang! Turns out the movie was awesomely entertaining with great humor and of course great tunes.

Rebel Wilson who plays Fat Amy is really a comedic star on a rise. There's a lot of LOL moment during her appearance in the movie and it was completely fun to watch. It's really hard to fun a dull moment in the movie and please do not expect an impromptu musical session to sing about what's going on at the moment, no, because this is not Glee.

The songs selection was great as most of it was not yet overly used in film/series of such genre. It was anything but that-same-song-again-with-different-cover-version. The music arrangement was creatively done and really gets the audience grooving to it. I love the riff off scene.

Aside from Anna Kendrick, Alexis Knapp is really a hottie in the movie and oh my gosh isn't she tall! I didn't know she can sing (or she didn't?). She's always appear in movie as the pretty face, same goes for this one but at least she has more attitude and character to show off.

Overall the movie was all fun and entertaining to watch. I really had a great time laughing in the cinema and I love the soundtrack for the movie. I would watch it again with no second thought. The best musical comedy film in 2012 so far.

[Movie Review] Soar Into The Sun (2012)

by Daniel Chiam

I wish can soar even higher ★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆ 4/10

Soar Into The Sun, also known as Return to Base (R2B) is a remake of the movie Red Scarf (1964). The Korean action film starring Rain (Jung Ji-Hoon) and Shin Se-Kyung as the main leads, tells the story of fighter jet pilots in the mist of facing crisis that might compromise the safety of their nation.

The movie was overall fun and entertaining to watch. Typical Korean funny moments and romance. Sadly the  plots didn't manage to soar high enough to really wow the audience with its action scenes or a remarkable story line. The movie in general was just moderate only.

I believe Rain still has the charm to lure all his fans to the cinema and watch the movie. Specially when this is Rain's last movie before he join the military service for at least 2 years! Not bad for a farewell gift to the fans.

Anyway, judging from the screenshot that I saw in their official Facebook page, I assume that there were a few scenes being deleted in the movie, no thanks to Malaysia censorship. Here are some scenes that wasn't shown in the cinema:

Tho Soar Into The Sun wasn't the best actions film made by the Korean, but with eye-candy like Rain and Shin Se-Kyung in the movie, you can't hardly wish the movie to end sooner but only for it to be better. The supporting cast was also impressive but yet I felt that they were undermined by the lack of build up for their characters.

[Movie Review] Skyfall (2012)

by Daniel Chiam

Back to Basic ★★★★★★☆☆ 8/10

Skyfall marked the 50th Anniversary of the James Bond series which started back in 1962 with Dr. No. It is also the 3rd installment for Daniel Craig to reprise the role as James Bond and in my opinion, Skyfall is the best Bond installment ever if compared to previous Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.

This time, rather than an international crisis that's threatening the MI6, the threats were much more personal for the villain -  Raoul Silva/Tiago Rodriguez (Javier Bardem) torward the head of MI6 - M (Judi Dench). In order to keep M safe from Silva, Bond revisit his past in Scotland - Skyfall, Bond's childhood home.

Everything was stripped to the core for Skyfall and it was genuinely a bold direction for a Bond movie to be made as such. No fancy gadgets, no overly expensive car with crazy weapons, no seductive female co-star, no crazy stunts and it was truly an original non-over exaggerate Bond movie. I love it.

Even without all those that made Bond of who he is the last time, it is still an actions filled and entertaining movie to watch. Skyfall really reinvented James Bond with much more character, charisma and charm. You will be extremely delighted with it (I hope, haha).

The 143 minutes movie prove to be worthy of watching. It's original. It doesn't overdo. It's stay true to Bond's capabilities and charm. Skyfall really brings something very fresh to the famous franchise and instead of serving the expected treat, you are in for something ecstatic this time.

Thanks to Sony Pictures Malaysia and Nuffnang for the invite.

[Movie Review] Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)

by Daniel Chiam

Fans DEMAND for Retribution! ★★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ 2/10

I made a quick recap of the previous 4 installment of Resident Evil if you never watched any/some of it, or just to refresh your memory of what happened before Resident Evil: Retribution.

This is by far the most disappointing, uncreative, uninteresting and unimaginative Resident Evil EVER! The story line and plot is crap. Script was just horrible and even the humor felt like it was force to be insert into the script. The fight scenes was uncreative, lazy and uninteresting at all!

It's a zombies actions movie for goodness sake. How can you messed up the zombies and made them look so uninteresting and so not scary at all! There was just too many flaws, too many loop holes and worse, NOTHING IS MAKING SENSE AT ALL in the movie!

I am truly disappointed with Paul Anderson the director. I went and watch with the lowest expectation ever and hopefully something simple could really impress me, but I ended up with further disappointment. Other than the hot girls, there's really nothing good I can say about the movie at all.

Overall, the 5th installment was finished just for the sake of "lets get it done with so we can all called it a day and head to the bar for some beers. It's on me!". SO EFFORTLESS! If possible, I really hope they could give RE a much more worthy ending in the 6th installment. PLEASE!

Quick Recap of The Previous 4 Resident Evil Series Before 'Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)'

by Daniel Chiam

Let's do a quick recap of the previous 4 installment of the Resident Evil series to get a better pictures before we get to Resident Evil: Retribution. Lets go!

Resident Evil (2002) ★★★★★☆☆☆ 6/10
Directed by Paul W. S. Anderson.

Alice is working with Umbrella Corporation, the organization that secretly created the T-Virus (a genetically constructed mutating virus) for the purpose of biological weapon. Alice was trying to expose the conspiracy but ended up trying to contain the outbreak of the T-Virus at a secret underground facility called The Hive with a band of Umbrella Corporation commandos. The virus infected all the people who work in the facility and turned them into a flesh eating undead. Later they found out the T-Virus has an anti-virus to reverse the mutation in early stage. Alice managed to escape from The Hive to the surface. She was captured and knocked unconscious afterwards. When Alice woke up, the virus  already spread to the surface of Raccoon City after Umbrella reopened The Hive.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) ★★★☆☆☆☆☆ 4/10
Directed by Alexander Witt.

Alice was being experimented by the Umbrella. She now posses superhuman strength, speed and agility. The character Jill Valentine and Carlos Olivera was introduced. Alice's mission along with other survivors is to evacuate from Raccoon City before a nuclear missile completely destroyed the city. In order to do that, they need to help save a little girl named Angela whose father is the scientist that created the T-Virus to get the location of the helicopter. At the end, Nemesis appeared and fought with Alice. Alice and few of the survivors managed to escape with the helicopter, but it was caught in the blast wave and crashes. Umbrella employees found Alice's body, badly burned. Three weeks later, Alice awakens in a water tank. Appeared to be experimented by Umbrella scientist Dr. Isaacs. She attacks him, and fights her way out of the facility. Finally, Alice was taken away by Carlos who disguise as Umbrella employee. Alice was let escaped on purpose and then Program Alice was activated.

Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) ★★★★★☆☆☆☆ 5/10
Directed by Russell Mulcahy.

Umbrella is cloning Alice to produce a cure for the T-Virus but was failed many time. The T-Virus was unable to be quarantine back in Raccoon City and is now spread to all around the world. After 5 years, the rest of the world eventually turned into deserted wastelands. Alice was separated from her previous group and is now travelling alone, she encountered Claire Redfield's convoy who was in trouble of being attacked by infected crows. Alice uses her psionic powers to defeat the crows. Alice shared with Claire that there is a 'safe zone' in Alaska which is free from infection and became the new direction for the convoy. They were ambush and attacked by the Umbrella and zombies at Las Vegas. Alice was almost being shut down remotely by the Umbrella but failed. They tracked down the Umbrella secret location and went there to get the helicopter to get to Alaska. Alice decided to deal with the Umbrella instead and letting Claire and the remaining survivors to take off with the helicopter. Alice fought with Dr. Isaacs who has mutated into a powerful Tyrant, and she was saved by her own clone at the end. Alice send out a warning declaring that she is coming for the new Umbrella chairman, Albert Wesker in Japan.

Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) ★★★★☆☆☆☆☆ 4/10
Directed by Paul W. S. Anderson.

The film start with Alice clones attempt to kill Wesker at his base in Tokyo. Wesker escapes and destroys all of the clones with the base. The real Alice boarded his aircraft beforehand and Wesker uses a serum to remove all of Alice's powers before the aircraft crash. Alice travels to Alaska to find the survivors from previous film and only found Claire who suffers from amnesia. Both travel to LA and found a group of survivors living in a prison surrounded by zombies. Alice found out that Arcadia (or the safe haven in Alaska) is actually a tanker ship and is close to the LA's shore. Majini zombies was being introduced, a zombie that can dug tunnel and also Axeman, a huge zombie that carrying an axe. Zombies managed to break into the prison and Alice along with everyone escaped using the sewers to reach Arcadia. Claire suddenly regains her memory, and reveals Arcadia was an Umbrella trap to gather survivors to be used as test subjects. Wesker appeared and was infected by the T-Virus. Alice is able to defeat both Bennett and Wesker with help from K-Mart. Alice resolves to turn Arcadia into a real safe haven and broadcasts a new message for any other survivors. The final scene, Alice see an approaching Umbrella assault helicopter squadron.

I've managed to do a marathon in a day for all the 4 movies, and I find that aside from the zombies and the actions, Resident Evil's plot and story line is a little bit too straight forward and uninteresting at all (aside from the first one which I still think is the best one among all so far).

[Movie Review] Total Recall (2012)

by Daniel Chiam

5/10 Totally Okay to Watch

Since I can't totally recall the original one, my review will be solely base on the movie itself without comparing it to the original 'Total Recall' back in 1990. Yes, this movie is a remake (just in case you didn't know that).

The story line was fairly written and not much weight to it other than the identity crisis of the protagonist; that itself was brilliantly executed in the movie, but that brilliant-ness doesn't last long. I felt that the political agenda was not being emphasis much and it sort of weaken the whole movie and the importance of the protagonist.

Kate Beckinsale's outstanding performance as the villain clearly overshadowed Colin Farrell's role as the protagonist. I was anticipating to see more kick ass actions from Kate throughout the whole movie than wanting to know how Colin are going to survive till the end. Kate is really that good and she's HOT!

Kate Beckinsale as Lori Quaid in Total Recall 2012

Overall, it's a none stop actions movie with some great chase scenes and one particularly great psychological intense moment. Totally enjoyable to watch but with not much to recall in the end. Could have been a great movie if only the significance of the agenda are being well laid out throughout the movie.

Thanks to Sony Pictures and Nuffnang for the invite.

[Movie Review] The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

by Daniel Chiam

7/10 Could have ended as an epic legend

I am so torn apart with the last installment of Batman - The Dark Knight Rises by Christopher Nolan. After such a spectacular story line and  marvelous cast in The Dark Knight, I was hoping for more and perhaps something new, something epic to end the legend. To me personally, I felt the movie fall short of that one last push to become an epic saga.

The story line was well crafted and I do like all the twist at the end of it. Perhaps it was the execution of it was somewhat a bit disappointing, especially with the villain character - Bane. He was so formidable at the beginning and what happened to him in the end was for me a lil' bit distasteful for the character.

The one great thing about the whole movie is that it was well emotionally invested in the build up for Batman's character. How he rises again as the dark knight to protect what he love the most - Gotham city. Overall the movie was anything but boring, with all the actions, great story line and impressive casts, The Dark Knight Rises provide a decent ending for the legend.

I also like the fact that Nolan tease us at the end of the movie that something may or may not come out as another sequel (tho he said this is the last one for him) or a spin off of the Batman series.

Thank you 20th Century Fox and Nuffnang for the invite.

[Movie Review] The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

by Daniel Chiam

5/10 A reboot covered with emotions

The Spider-Man reboot has nothing much new to put on the table aside from the amazing graphic and cinematography. Also the two appealing leads - Garfield and Stone really nailed their role in the movie creating a much more original character if compared to the previous one. Other than that, it is pretty much a standard superhero movie.

Tho I must say this Spider-Man movie brings out much of the human emotions if compared to the previous ones.  It is much more engaging to the audience emotionally rather than excited about the actions that Spidey always delivered.

All this time I thought that the tagline 'great power, comes great responsibility' is a significant turning point in Spider-Man episodes, but it was not mentioned at all in this movie and I really felt something was missing.

By the way, I think Stan Lee's appearance in this movie is the coolest yet among all his cameos in Marvel movies.

Overall, The Amazing Spider-Man is a good film, but nothing about it even hints at greatness.
-Jay Hutchinson

Webb doesn't elevate the reboot as much as keep its head above water, while pedaling furiously below the surface. He proves himself skilled at technically sophisticated multiplex fare without losing track of the narrative threads.
-Duane Dudek

[Movie Review] Prometheus 2012

by Daniel Chiam

6/10 Fans will love the ending :D

I know of lot of Alien and Ridley Scott's fans are looking forward for Prometheus. The good news is, the movie is all what you can asked for in a sci-fi movie. Questions upon questions of why this and that, overall mind boggling - especially when Prometheus is about discovering the origin of mankind.

The down side of the whole movie for me, would be the lack of characters builds, which leave a lot of questions of why certain characters do what they do. In the end a lot of mystery left unresolved but in many ways, I really think that's the selling point for Prometheus. One thing for sure, fans will love what's install for them at the end.

Overall, the movie is a love and hate relationship for me. The aliens existed in the movie is kinda cool and gross at the same time tho xD

Prometheus is a visual triumph and if nothing else it deserves credit for the moments when it does evoke the early scenes in Alien with the same degree of sinister wonder.
-Thomas Caldwell

[Movie Review] Project X (2012)

by Daniel Chiam

7/10 The awesome party movie so far!

What would you do just to be popular for a day? You throw the baddest and most awesome party ever! Project X is such an epic teen movie. Uniquely done and marvelously entertaining. I for once would want to be in the party that they are throwing next!

Overloaded with foul language, gratuitous nudity, obnoxious characters, and the sub-standard cinematography of the "found footage" style.... But damn if it's not entertaining.

[Movie Review] American Pie: Reunion (2012)

by Daniel Chiam

3/10 Just to complete the series

All the original main cast is once again reunited for what-I-think-is a final showdown for the series, tho the ending might suggest otherwise. Sad to say, not much of hoo haa to cheer about for the reunion. In many ways, the movie does portrait that all of them are already grown up, and they just can't pull off any more teenage humor.

I'm a fan of American Pie, and watching American Reunion is just for me to complete the series. Whether its awesome or just simply not living up to the expectation, it really doesn't matter anymore.

None of it makes much of an impression, although there are a few nice and surprisingly heartfelt moments around the edges.

[Movie Review] 21 Jump Street (2012)

by Daniel Chiam

5/10 Modern day police comedy

It's nothing like the original 21 Jump Street. Instead of more actions and explosions, it has more comedies for a true follower to handle (which I'm not). It was all good at the beginning but toward the middle of it, the jokes runs dry and thankfully was able to picked up at the end for a more acceptable ending.

The two original actor, Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise made a short cameo toward the end of the show and Depp is all quirky for it, haha.

The film isn't long, but it runs dry at a certain point, and tries to rescue itself by morphing into an action movie, with only middling results.

[Movie Review] This Means War (2012)

by Daniel Chiam

4/10 Luke warm comedy and romance

Not the best romantic comedy from Reese Witherspoon. I guess it was just too balance where it was not too funny nor it was too romantic, and it was good enough to finish up a popcorn and soda. Definitely not a memorable film but still watchable and enjoy a few laughter along the way :D

I have never been in a movie screening that had such a divided reaction as This Means War; on one side film critics moaning and groaning from start to finish, on the other a young audience laughing and cheering through every scene.

[Movie Review] Marvel's The Avengers (2012)

by Daniel Chiam

7/10 Too good to be real

I love all the superheroes, especially HULK! Omigosh, I never really thought that Hulk will exceptionally standout this time. Not much personality change in the rest of the characters that you love (which is good), and even the plot was nicely done. I love the build up of the movie.

The only downside for me is that the villain - Loki wasn't evil enough for 6 superheroes to handle. Tho having saying that, I believe this is just the warm up for the beginning of The Avengers series. The movie was all great with funny humour along the way.

*Do not leave the cinema when the credits start rolling. Wait for another short scene after that. Typical Marvel!

The dialogue sparkles as brightly as the special effects; these people may be wearing ridiculous costumes but they're well fleshed-out underneath. And so in every regard, this movie truly fulfills its hype.
- Christy Lemire

Enjoy the movie people! =)

TV Shows That I'm Currently Watching

It's holidays and yes we all do have a lot of time to spend and I've acquired a number of tv show to watch during my free time. Since some of it has already reached more than 5 season, I just watch any series I feel like watching without focusing on finishing one at a time.

Here's some that I'm currently watching :D

Community - About a group of people from different background and age in a study group going through their life as a college student in a community college. I really like this show a lot. Brilliant script, good story line and fresh comedic ideas. This show really made me love paintball a lot!

How I Met Your Mother - It's a story Ted telling his son and daughter about how he had met their mother. I watched this before but not the whole episodes, so here I am watching the series from season 1 episode 1. It's really hilarious and by far IMHO HIMYM is the closest to be Friends successor.

House M.D - Story about the genius of Dr. House and how he solved patient's medical condition. It's my all time favorite tv show. I don't understand much of the medical terms but Dr. House is like Sherlock Holmes in the medical world. I like solving mysteries and sarcasm :D

The Big Bang Theory - Story about 2 nerds with super IQ staying next door to a cute blondie. I'm still in season 1 of the show and I can tell you the show is super nerdy and geeky (which is funny also). I don't think I can catch up with much of the conversations but I will still give it a try. I lost in translation sometimes =/

Once Upon A Time - It's my newest collection of tv show and it's just started to air back in October 2011. It's an untold story of what happened next to Snow White after she and the prince charming got married. Well, so far that's what I known of. Just have to see how the show evolve :D

Any new recommendation for me?

Until next time, see you around my friend =)

[Movie Review] Underworld: Awakening (2012)

by Daniel Chiam

Fast Pace Gore Actions! 5/10

This 4th installment really reminds me of Blade II - more actions and less story telling. Not the best movie by itself but since I've watched the previous 3 movie before, and knowing that there will be a 5th installment afterwards, I think its just awesome to be able to watch Kate Beckinsale getting more physically kick ass in the series.

The reason the Underworld series works is Kate Beckinsale's portrayal of the all black clad, baddass Vampire Selene is just cool. She doesn't whine, moan, or sparkle she just kicks the butt of anyone who screws her over.
-Michelle Alexandria
PS: This is how vampires and werewolves should be! Not all sparkling, soft and girlish xD

[Movie Review] We Bought a Zoo (2011)

Heart warming 7/10

I watched the movie with zero expectation and surprisingly, I like it a lot. The whole emotional journey of the story is well written and it managed to capture the true essence of the story that it wants to tell to the audience.

I would really suggest this based on a true story, comedy-drama film for a family movie. It will help strengthen the bonding with each family members. Great performance by Matt Damon. Scarlett Johansson is just ever so pretty :D
I am overrating this film a bit, but on a subjective level I just really loved it. The movie had a few cliche trappings, but surprisingly avoided many as well. The story had more emotional depth than most family films ever do, the humor was well timed and not too silly, and all of the characters had a part to play that felt natural and furthered the story. It was just great to watch a clean family film with my family with solid acting and a fun story.
