#RipCurlProTerengganu | Thank You Very Nice!

by Daniel Chiam

The Rip Curl Pro 6-Star Asian Surfing Championship at Batu Burok beach, Terengganu has finally come to an end on Sunday (2 December 2012). It was indeed a prestigious event that has sparked the interest of many in the sport of surfing within Malaysia itself, and also opened the eyes of the world to the beautiful waves that Terengganu has to offer.

The weather was in great condition for the past 3 days except during the final showdown when it started raining, but at the same time created a much perfect condition with more waves for the surfers to catch and performed their skills.

The crowd turned out was great, especially for the the first 2 days where a lot of the local surfing fans came to support and witness the best of Asian surfers in actions. The crowd was lesser on Sunday morning because it was a working day for the state of Terengganu and somehow it effected the amount of people that turned out at the beginning of the day. In the late afternoon, tho it was raining during the finals, there are a lot of people show up who are taking  shelters along the booths area to witness the surfers giving their best to rise up as champion.

Other than the competition itself, there is still a lot more things that's going on during the 3 days event. There were a few booths to play games and to win some merchandise from Rip Curl and also from one of the sponsor, Fanta drink. Free Nestle Drumstick ice cream were available the whole 3 days! I have eaten countless ice cream *heaven*, haha oh so nice! There were also a surfboard artist there; Laura who did a splendid job drawing cute characters to decorate the surfers' surfboard, surf clinic where you get to learn how to surf, and many more things going on in that 3 days!

Laura the surfboard artist

The fun part for me and some of us bloggers is the process of taking photos of the surfers in actions, where all of us have the smallest zoom lens if compared to the photographers who showed up for the event with their gigantic and super long zoom lens. We had to go further into the water just to take a few good shots and the surfers needed to wait for the right wave in order to get a better ride, they waited and so are we. It was really an experience that I will forever cherish.

Samuel from seraphsam.com

It's really not easy to take photos of the surfers in actions okay! Most of the time we just had to give up because the scorching hot sun and the tide was too strong. We have tried our best and I know I have have did the best I know how. Hopefully I can do better for the next surfing event (if I ever get to be invited to one again). I'll try to upload as soon as possible all the photos that are with me. At the moment, here's some teaser from Rip Curl Pro Terengganu 2012:

Anyway, here's the Rip Curl Pro Terengganu 2012 Competition Results:

ASC Men’s Open Division
1. Made Darmayasa (IDN)
2. Garut Widiarta (IDN)
3. Andre Julian (IDN)

1. Arip Nurhidayat (IDN)
2. Tipi Jabrik (IDN)

4. Khairil Doje (MLY)

ASC Women’s Division
1. Jesse Hong (TWN)

3. Ali Javeed (MDV)
4. Hatta Affendi (MLY)

*MDV: Maldives, JPN: Japan, ENG: England, THA: Thailand, TWN: Taiwan, IDN: Indonesia, MLY: Malaysia

The contest was clearly dominated by the surfers from Indonesia, and it was Bali's Made Darmayasa's first ever wins in ASC Men’s Open competition at the Rip Curl Pro Terengganu. I have to admit that the Indonesian surfers are more aggressive and very good at catching the right waves. Congrats to all the winners!

Made Darmayasa (in yellow). Photo courtesy of ASC Media

Only three Malaysian surfers that made it into the finals which is Syed El Hussain Syed Atikullah, Hatta Affendi both for the Bodyboard Division and Khairil Doje for the ASC Longboard Division.

I was rooting for our female Malaysian surfer; Brenda Lee who only manage to qualified until the semi finals. She has fought a good fight but was unable to catch the right waves most of the time and had to settled in the fourth place during her final heat.

Brenda Lee after her final heat in the semi finals.

Rip Curl Pro Terengganu 2012 is a great significant for all the Malaysian surfers as it is the highlight needed to expose and share with the whole of Malaysia especially about the beauty of surfing the waves. It might not be a popular sport yet in Malaysia but with the on going support and publicity by media, state tourism and also the Malaysia tourism, I believe that one day we can have as much great surfers as other countries have and that we Malaysia too can be a place for great surfers from all around the world to gather and have a good time at the beach and on the Malaysia's waves.

Thank you again Rip Curl Malaysia for inviting me for such a prestigious event and also the great hospitality during the event. See you again in Rip Curl Pro next year perhaps?

PS: "Thank you very nice" was the catch phrase used by the commentator throughout the event and it just stuck in everyone's head, haha.

Rip Curl: Sun, Sand, Beach and Shades

by Daniel Chiam

Olla people, updating live from Terengganu! If you've been snooping around here long enough then you'll know that I will be at Batu Burok, Terrenganu for the weekend to cover for the Rip Curl Pro's Malaysia first ever 6-Star Asian Surfing Championship! It's happening from 30th November till 2nd December. So if you are nearby, do drop by for this happening event!

Just for this this event, I have raided the Rip Curl's fitting room just to find something nice from them to wear on the beach, enjoying the sun, listening to the ocean's wave and checking out girls in bikinis :D

It's blardy red mate!

I really like the fabric of Rip Curl's t-shirt. It's soft, thin and very comfortable as a beach wear. Especially with the sun trying to burn you up, a normal cotton t-shirt just makes it even warmer and you'll easily sweat but that's not the case with Rip Curl's t-shirt.

Checkout the awkward smile mate

You can even feel it when the breezing wind is blowing at you because of the thin fabric. It is just an awesome and soothing feeling; a full body experience with nature. I'm also checking out their shorts and was hoping that I can buy one for my future island or beach trip, haha. They have a lot of good looking pants but I like this particular one.

Hmm should I buy the pants or not....

Just to let you know, Rip Curl is an Australian brand and their sizes are one or two size bigger for Asian. I was trying out size XS and S for all the shirts here, that's why you can see my tummy and how I tried my best to suck it in to make it less obvious, haha.

Freakin' awesome pants

Anyway, I am very much looking forward for the event later in the morning. I'll try my best to update it at night and letting you in on what's going on in Malaysia first ever 6-Star Asian Surfing Championship. All the best especially to our Malaysian surfers - Brenda, Semmy and Bryan Ng.

All the hair, beard and mustache for #Movember

Shades are crucial to protect the eyes from the sun, to look cool and to steal a few glimpses of the people around you, hahaha. I am so ready for the beach and also to surf the wave (if I got the chance)!

Congratulation to Vivi =)

It was down to 5 bloggers with 5 flavours, 5 promises and only one winner. The other bloggers who were also campaigning are Hanis Zalikha with her World Class Chocolate and free toppings when you purchase double scoops ice cream, Kinky Blue Fairy with her Jamoca Almond Fudge and mini waffle sundae @ RM9.90+, KY Speaks and his Very Berry Strawberry and 31% off waffle berry sundaes, Sixth Seal with his Cookies n' Cream and buy 1 blast, 50% off the 2nd blast. Which is your vote?

Mynn from Red FM and Liang performing.

I managed to tried all of the ice cream flavours cause Baskin Robbins was kind enough to gave a free flow of ice cream to everyone who attended the finale that night. I do have to admit that I favor the taste of Pralines n' Cream, its really delicious! Can't really remember when was the last time I was so stuffed with that many awesome ice creams.

Anuar and Fareed eating like mad!

Talking about stuffed yourself with ice cream, there were also ice creams eating competition to determine who can finished up the most ice creams in the given time or finishes the amount of ice creams provided before the given time.

Our friend Fareed and Atika won the competition in two separate round and both are walking away with Baskin Robbins vouchers to be use for a year! Its a lot of vouchers! They were kind enough to gave us some of it, wooohooo! Thanks again guys!

It was really fun to meet some of the familiar blogger friends during the event. I kept seeing them queuing for ice creams, haha. All fun and ice creams - it really doesn't get better than this to kick-start the awesome weekend!

Behind The Lens with Gregory Cheong

by Daniel Chiam

Yesterday I have the privilege to attend the 8th edition of Behind The Lens (BTL) at Ecoba Restaurant & Bar at Damansara Perdana. It was my first time attending it and its an event inspired by the similar concept of Inside The Actors Studio, where for BTL, it is a series of live interview with professional photographers and their award winning images. BTL is independently produced and hosted by Peter Tan, whose works is very well known in the industry as well.

That night, instead of photography, we have the privilege to learn something new from the perspective of a videographer and also their works. The guest speaker for the night is non other than Gregory Cheong the creative director of Gregs Video Sdn. Bhd. Ever since I did my very first wedding video, I always have the desire to want to learn more about videography than just learning from my own observation. What better chance do I have but to listen and digest from one of the best in the industry.

Yours truly and Gregs. Photo by Tian Chad.

I know very few about the man himself, but Gregs and his team did a lot of Indian weddings and apparently has been going all over Asia for their work. Gregs also showcases some of his production to all of us that night, and I was in awe with all of his wedding videos. It was beautifully done and definitely are love stories worth watching.

To produce wedding videos from different cultural background, a lot of homework and research had to be done before hand, in order not to missed out on any important moment. Of course the demand and wants of the customers had to be taken into consideration also. Preparation is crucial.

The old age problem of photographer being in a videographer's frame and vice versa was also being brought up. Gregs suggested that both just had to communicate before the event started, tho sometimes it may work but often it just doesn't worked out as planned. So the best solution is, you just needed to be great in taking videos and be very good in editing it afterwards.

Everyone who attended that night.

I've learnt a lot from Gregs and was just too many to share it out here. It was indeed a resourceful night and a night that filled with laughter too. A few giveaway from the sponsors was also being given out through lucky draw that night. I wanted the tripod so bad but my name was never being called, haha. Perhaps I'll have better chance in the next meeting. Yes, the next Thursday meeting will be on December 6 and it will be featuring Zung ThePhotoz. You can checkout the Facebook event created HERE.

Zung with yours truly. Photo by Tian Chad

I'm starting to like this BTL event, and all thanks to Tian Chad (TC) for bringing me along with him. It's really an eye opening event and it helps to boils up my interest in photography and videography as well. Hopefully TC will be able to be TBL's guest speaker one day and hopefully I will too, haha. There is still so much to learn and for now, I'm just enjoying that process of learning.

Me and the awesome Tian Chad.

On an additional notes, Gregs had officially launched Gregs Academy that night and is open to anyone who is interested in learning the arts of videography with him personally and also his team. You will be able to be apart of the team for 3 month to learn, to study and also to participate in their actual wedding shoot as your field work. The fee is roughly around RM7000+ for 3 month of life changing and experience filled  course with one of the most awesome production team in Malaysia. My First Live Ring Side Muay Thai Experience

by Daniel Chiam

All the Nuffnangers were all hyped up and excited about the Thailand vs Asia's Muay Thai matches after we attended the Muay Thai Saved My Life Workshop last month. The anticipation was fairly high for me because it was going to be my first time attending a Muay Thai fights and to know that Fay Hokulani is going to be there too, I got extra excited even.

Thanks to Cik Lily Putih for taking care of the tickets for all the bloggers. Oh yes, all of us attended the event with media pass and thus gave us the privilege to stand on the ring side, take pictures and enjoy the fights from up close.

There were 6 matches in total and whereby 3 of the matches is the highlights of the night, the fights between Thailand and Malaysia. The 3 Malaysian representative are Kudin, Ali Yaakub and Faizal Ramli, while the rest of the challengers are Liu Xiang Ming (China), Leo Monteiro (Brazil) and Mosafa Abdollahi (Iran).

The sport has long been dominated by the Thai and to defend their honor on that night were 6 prominent and  skillful Muay Thai fighters namely Yaya, Changpuek, Jom Kitti, Petchumpol, Madsua and Armin. The pressure were high because every fighters were desired to prove themselves to be the best in the sport.

Watching the match live from the ring side definitely gave a different experience. The punches and kicks that were throw by these trained athletes were as hard and as powerful as their desire to win. The sounds of the body clashing brings shiver down the spine. One can only imagine how painful it is to be hit by any of them.

Ali Yaakub (right) was dominating his opponent that night.

Each round lasted for 3 minutes and each fight will only last for 5 round (unless if there were a knockout in early round). The Thais prove themselves to be worthy of the throne when they won 5 out of the 6 matches that night. Being the only challenger to win that night, Ali Yaakub has made Malaysia very proud.

Fay Hokulani and Diana Danielle, the emcees of the night.

It was really an unforgettable experience to be able to see a glimpse of what this fighters had to go through in the ring. One can only imagine the amount of training and beat up they had to suffer before they were able to be prominent in the ring and proven to be a worthy opponent to their challenger.

Muay Thai is definitely one of the most full on body contact sport that I have seen so far and it is also one of the sport which hold highly of it cultural background. I really wish to see more Muay Thai event being highlighted in Malaysia. Not just announcing that there is a Muay Thai event per se, but hopefully more activities or workshop is being done to promote and expose to the rest of the Malaysian.

There were also a fashion show before the press conference started to showcase the latest surf/beach wear from Rip Curl. It really made me feel like going to the beach after the show, and I am truly excited for the event happening end of next month.

Fashion Show by students from Amber Chia Academy

How often do we have such prestigious surfing competition happening right here in our own backyard? People from all around will be gathering at Batu Burok beach to witness the surfers takes on our Malaysian waves, and if possible, I don't want to miss that.

The Malaysian Surfers - Brenda Lee, Semmy, Bryan Ng and me

I believe surfing is not yet a popular sport in Malaysia and I strongly believe that this event is a great stepping stone to promote the sport to our Malaysian youngster. Hopefully our wave will be great enough in the monsoon for the surfers to perform their ultimate best.

Again, Rip Curl and the partnership with State Government of Terengganu will bring you Malaysia first ever 6-Star Asian Surfing Championship surfing competition that will take place at Batu Burok Beach, Terengganu, from November 30th until December 2nd, 2012. How Did I Won A Brand New Samsung Galaxy SIII

by Daniel Chiam

Did anyone of you went for the #ChurpOut2012 event at Publika yesterday? Cause it was freakin' wet and awesome! I met a lot of familiar blogger's face there, celebrities, pretty girls and most importantly, I won a brand new Samsung Galaxy SIII there!

I've been desperate to change my X10 mini pro into a larger screen phone for quite sometimes now, but my saving for phone never met its target and somehow, I really attended the event with a burning flame to win that SIII.

I joined the Xpax Whatchuwant Pimp My Ride contest and they ONLY accept the first 15 people who registered for the contest on the spot. Yes people, I reached Publika early just to be that first 15 people who sign up, haha.

All of us were given 1 hour to paint or customize a white Mini Cooper car model as creative as possible. Then the game begin. I had no preparation what-so-ever for the contest and whatever I did to the car is just all base on the little arts experience that I have in the past.

When the one hour time was done. I looked at everyone's car and was truly impress by most of it. So many talented people and somehow it's going to be tough for the judges to select the winner. I had given all my best and whatever happened I should really enjoy the fun time painting the car, haha.

This was what I drew initially but I had to wipe it all off and redo again afterwards =/

I truly enjoy the company of fellow blogger friends. Merryn and family is always the best to hangout with, haha. Specially when you have the energetic Ethan around. I wanted to take a ride on the rodeo bull but then all the contestant were being summon as they are ready to announce the winner.

As we gathered. I can see that there were 2 judges who is still deciding and looking at all the cars that was displayed in a row, and mine was on number 11. I can see that they were pointing at my car and then look at others again. The tension is really killing me! I was like "just announce the winner and let's get this done with". One of them scribbled something on a piece of paper and pass it to Linora Low from Red FM who was the official emcee of the day.

Bottom right, that's my car with the flare :D

Either I win this or I shall get soaking wet by joining the Dunked & Draw game that were going on in the event as well. Linora opened the paper, and she didn't announce it just yet. She asked confirmation from the judges, they nodded and one of them were saying something to her. I was like "God please let me win!!! Please choose number 11".

"Aaaaand the winner is.... nummmmber... Eeeeeeleven!". I was over joyed when I heard I was the chosen winner, I got up and I gave my best shout: "Wooooohoooo!". Linora was like, "you are the winner?". Oh yes I am the winner yo! Followed with a lot of pictures taking session.

Everyone was congratulating me while I'm still in disbelief. It takes awhile before reality kicks in for me. I am truly happy cause I never won such expensive prize in my life, really thank God for the blessing. I congrats the other participant that I know also, cause truly everyone had the chance to win and so happened mine was selected by the judges.

Photo taken from the Xpaxsays Twitter account.

Will show you the phone once I collected it (hopefully SOON!). Thank you again to friends that shared my joy. All of you are truly the magnificent. Thank you Xpax, ChurpChurp, Nuffnang and if MTV is willing to pimp my ride, I will thank you too, haha. It was indeed a great event. Everyone had a lot of fun and see you all again at #ChurpOut2013 next year :D

Samsung Galaxy Note II Media Launch in Malaysia

by Daniel Chiam

Recommended Retail Price: RM2,299

Thank you Samsung Malaysia for the invite of the media launch for the Samsung Galaxy Note II at Zebra Square KL yesterday. It was an awesome event, great food, great company and of course the main highlight of the night, the launch of Samsung Galaxy Note II.

Let's cut to the chase and see what's so great about the Note II. After seeing the presentation and short demo, I can conclude that the Note II is absolutely great for multitasking and for creativity purposes.

5.5" (140.9mm) HD Super AMOLED (1,280 x 720, 264 ppi)

Multitasking.
Like Note 10.1, Note II also has the ability of multiwindow which enable you to multitask and be more effective in getting your work done. With the 5.5" screen, I find that the space you have to jot down notes, while browsing the net is quite sufficient and being able to adjust the size of the windows to suit your need, it really made multitask a lot easier.

Now sadly the multiwindow function doesn't come in the first batch of the Note II yet, and you will need to wait for the OTA upgrade before you can use the multiwindow function.

Dimension: 80.5 x 151.1 x 9.4mm, 180g.

S Pen.
The S Pen is cool. I didn't really get a good try during the launch of Note 10.1 but I did get to give it a good feel this time, and I must say that it is really cool. The S Pen works like a laser beam and without touching the screen it enable the "air view" function, which allows you to preview inside a folder without having to open it first. I know we have a lot of function like that with our computer but to have it on the Note II, it is really cool.

The sensitivity of the S pen is very good. I tried scribbles a few time on the S note and trying out the air view function, it responded very well and I get the hang of it quite fast too :D

1.6 GHz Quad-Core processor, 2GB RAM

Scribbles, doodles and be creative.
Note II is really about sparking your creativeness. Crop, paste, draw, write on-the-go, whenever, wherever and it is totally awesome. Perhaps Note II can really makes you forget about typing and get more personal with your writings.

Instead of typing a caption for the photo that you just took, you can write it down and make it more personal. Just like taking picture with an instant camera and when the photo came out, you can just scribble on it or behind it before giving it away to someone. With Note II, instead of giving it to just one person you can share it with all your friends and also in the social media with the world.

Now, this is just a short overview of the Note II from what I saw during the presentation and also from trying it out myself for a short while. I believe that there is many more things that you can do with the Note II and some will only works better when you have it on Wi-Fi.

Hopefully I'll be the selected one to be able to take home the Note II for review purposes and be able to write more on this amazing device. So far, I really like the Note II, the things that it can do, the possibilities that it can offers and also how it helps you to be creative in the marketplace.

Superstars of Magic 2 by Resorts World Genting

by Daniel Chiam

Ever since the press conference for Superstars of Magic 2, the anticipation to watch the live show was very much skyrocketed and finally we were able to catch the show last Friday and it was hilarious, astonishing, mesmerizing, and above all magical. You just have to see it to believe it!

The funny guy, Chipper.

Chipper Lowell from USA is the official emcee of the show and he was absolutely, totally and extremely funny! It was more to comedy than magic for him, and it keeps the crowd from laughing and laughing and laugh even more. He is really entertaining!

Charlie Frye & Co kicks off with a variety act of juggling, magic to comedy. It was entertaining but not so much magic going on there. My anticipation is still a full on magic act!

Awesomely impressive!

Nestor Hato the card manipulation champion from France. He made the desire to learn card tricks burn like never before. His act was so cool, with all the cards flying around, disappear and reappearing. The crowd was totally mesmerize by his performance. At the end, keep your eyes on his hair! Omigosh how did he even do that?!

Christian Lindermann is the Europe's best pickpocket artist and not only that, he is also oh-so-funny guy too. "I LIKE", haha. Keep your eyes on his hands and see how sneaky and clever it is for him to "steal" from a member of the audience.

Don't ever try this at home!

Dean Gunnarson is the world's greatest escape artist from Canada and watching him doing his death defying act is really heart pounding and nerve wrecking at the same time. It was extremely impressive to wonder how in the world he managed to escape from such near death experience!

The only Asian performers in the show; JC Sum and 'Magic Babe' Ning. Now this two, is really O.M.G! Their performance really gives hope that tho magic can be decoded but it is still extremely mind boggling to see it done live. 'Magic Babe' Ning was lock in a chest and all the while we can see her hands, then suddenly she pop out of no where in the crowd. I was like WTFish! When... How... she does it?! Brilliant!

Mysterious balls keeps coming and going.

Shooting endless cards like nobody's business!

The two young magician; SOS & Tigran Junior, was pretty impressive too. Simple magic tricks by the 12 year old and yet it was still entertaining. The older brother was performing similar cards manipulation as Hato, tho similar but it was very entertaining in so many different ways.

Talking about burning desire, this guy was literally on fire!

The final act was by SOS & Victoria Petrosyan, and you literally could no take your eyes off the gorgeous Victoria. She keeps changing into a different mesmerizing outfits in seconds! I believe all the ladies would love to know how it works as it could come in handy just in case someone is wearing the same outfit as yours for an occasion.

The Superstars of Magic 2 will be happening till 9th of September 2012. So WAIT NO MORE and get your tickets now before the coolest magic show in town disappear and don't know when to return yet!
